4ocean Partnerships | FAU Marine Research Lab and the Sea Turtles We’re Saving Together

4ocean partnered with Florida Atlantic University to advance sea turtle rescue and release efforts. Here’s what we accomplished together. Learn more at https://4ocean.com/pages/sea-turtle

Florida’s beaches are one of the most important sea turtle habitats in the world, especially for loggerhead sea turtles. About 90% of all loggerhead sea turtles in the Atlantic hatch here. It’s the largest and most densely nested area in the world. What happens in Florida matters because it drives all the trends for sea turtles in the Atlantic and determines the future of the entire species.

“One of the key things we’re trying to find out is whether we have enough males and females hatching to supply future generations,” says Dr. Jeanette Wyneken, an FAU Biological Sciences professor. “Sea turtles are [sic] animals that have environmentally determined sex. The incubation conditions in the nest determine whether a turtle is a boy or a girl. Cooler temperatures produce more males, hotter temperatures produce more girls. In 2015, 2016, and 2017, we had 100% female production.

“So what’s contributing to hotter nests is hotter, drier conditions. One or two summers of [those conditions] are just variations in weather. Multiple years of that, that’s changes in climate. We’re looking at climate change and, because we’ve been measuring these conditions since 2002 and have been monitoring those increasing frequencies of hot, dry conditions that produce these 100% female nests, we’re starting to better understand what kinds of things help mitigate that.

“Partnering with 4ocean made all the difference in the world. We have to buy the components for food. We have to make sure we keep their tanks clean. We have to occasionally replace tanks. Buying the bracelets made it possible for us to feed the turtles, clean the turtles, [and] give them a good place to live. All of that is possible because of 4ocean.”

You can help make a difference for sea turtles and support the critical research happening at FAU by purchasing a 4ocean Sea Turtle Bracelet. Get the bracelet here: https://4ocean.com/products/sea-turtle-bracelet
