How are 4ocean t-shirts made?

Anyone can make a t-shirt, but creating one that represents the clean ocean movement is a bit more complicated. That’s why we set out to produce a t-shirt that you could wear with pride and have confidence that it was produced responsibly.

We made sure to go the extra mile to ensure our shirts were eco-friendly because our supporters would expect nothing less from us. Made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, our t-shirts are colored with low-impact, ocean safe dyes and produced by partners that practice the industry best standards.

GOTS, or Global Organic Textile Standard, is the highest standard of the finished organic textile because it doesn’t just include the cotton itself, but everything throughout the process of making the textile.

60% of the material that makes up our clothes worldwide are made from polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers. These are ALL forms of plastic and are contributing to the ocean plastic pollution crisis! It’s estimated that a single load of laundry with these materials can shed up to 17.7 million microfibers straight into our water supply.

Okay, so why “organic” cotton?

Well, standard cotton can do harm to our environment because of the large amounts of water used to sustain it and the pesticides that are used to protect it. These pesticides can harm animals, poison farmers, and even end up in our waterways. Organic cotton, on the other hand, is a good sustainable solution, because it is pesticide free and grown from seeds which have not been genetically modified.
